Sheldon’s CFL Power Rankings [After Week 2]

  1. Montreal Alouettes (Last Rank: 1)
Montreal traveled west again to Edmonton and squeaked out a 23-20 win. The main difference in the game was the Alouettes ability to hang onto the ball and not turn it over. Opening the season with two road wins is already impressive but add to the fact that they had to travel across the country and back again twice to do it. Next up they host the REDBLACKS on Thursday Night Football.

  2. Toronto Argonauts (Last Rank: 2)
Toronto stays at number 2 because they are on the bye. If that was not the rule that I made at the beginning, they might not have… They are home to Edmonton on Saturday night.

  3. Saskatchewan Roughriders (Last Rank: 3)
Saskatchewan headed east to face the Hamilton Ticats and escaped Steeltown with 33 – 30 win. It was the second game in a row that the Riders score unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and win. This Rider team does not quit and while they did have some bounces go their way, they capitalized on Hamilton’s two turnovers. The Ticats will look for revenge as they head to Regina on Sunday for the back half of the home and home.

  4. BC Lions (Last Rank: 4)
BC returned home after a tough loss to Toronto and after 50 Cent got the fifty-three thousand fans rocking, played a solid game to beat the Stamps. The offensive line did a far better job protecting Vernon Adams and again, turnovers were the difference. The Lions forced three turnovers and got the job done. Next up is a trip to Winnipeg against the 0-2 Bombers.

  5. Ottawa REDBLACKS (Last Rank: 7)
Ottawa had a lot of question marks at the beginning of the season. Who was going to be QB1, who would be RB1 with Devonte Williams out for the season? Well, Ottawa came out firing and got out to an early 10-0 lead over the 2023 West Division Champions. They were able to weather the storm (literally) and hold on to beat the Bombers to go 1-0 on the season. This week is a tougher test as they head to Montreal to face the reigning champs.

  6. Calgary Stampeders (Last Rank: 5)
The Stamps are a better team than I thought they would be at the beginning of the season. Jake Maier is leaner, and he has help from his receivers, but ball control is imperative in the CFL. You cannot turn the ball over three times and expect to win any games. They have the bye this week.

  7. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Last Rank: 6)
Truthfully, the Ticats deserved to win the game this week. Bo Levi Mitchell is looking like the Bo who is the winningest QB in CFL history and not the one who has been hampered with injuries the past couple of seasons. But you cannot let a team come back and score sixteen unanswered points on you. Another couple of costly drops by Tim White and it might have been a different story. Rematch time on Sunday in Regina at Mosaic Stadium.

  8. Edmonton Elks (Last Rank: 8)
Listen, I do not think the Elks are terrible. They have lost to the two unbeaten teams by a combined total of eleven points. They do need to figure things out quickly though as starting off 0-2 at home is not an effective way to get more fans in the stadium. This week does not get any easier as they head to Toronto to play the 1-0 Argos.

  9. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Last Rank: 9)
I cannot sugar coat this. The bombers LOOK terrible. But I do not think they ARE terrible. Injuries to key players and the loss of a couple other ones to free agency and hurting right now. Zach Collaros does not have his All-Star RT Yoshi Hardrick anymore and it’s showing. They now host the BC Lions on Friday Night Football and they need to have a better showing at home or things are going to get ugly at Princess Auto Stadium.
