Sheldon’s CFL Power Rankings [After Week 3]

  1. Montreal Alouettes (Last Rank: 1)
The Alouettes finally got to raise the Grey Cup banner at their home opener and then mollywhopped the Ottawa REDBLACKS. Not much else needs to be said. They are the cream of the crop of the CFL. They head back on the road to Toronto to play the Argos this week.

  2. Saskatchewan Roughriders (Last Rank: 3)
Saskatchewan wanted to get a fast start and they did that in their home opener against the Ticats. In a very unusual move, they won the coin toss and deferred to the second half (not unusual) but then took the wind (and it was quite the wind) in the first quarter where they forced a fumble on the kickoff and were off to an early 7-0 lead. They did not look back and dominated even after losing QB Trevor Harris late in the first half. The early bye week comes at the right time for the Riders.

  3. BC Lions (Last Rank: 4)
BC rolled into hostile territory and came out with the win. The protection of Vernon Adams was night and day compared to last week when the Argos were all over the Lions offensive line, and Vernon made the Bombers pay. Winning in Winnipeg is no easy task, but they look to continue the momentum this week when they host the Elks on Thursday Night Football.

  4. Toronto Argonauts (Last Rank: 2)
The Argonauts were able to hold off the Elks and emerged as the victor after an offensive shootout with the Edmonton Elks. As I tweeted, it seemed like the kind of game that whoever had the ball last was going to win, even though in the last five minutes, both defenses decided to make their presence known. They host the first place Alouettes this week.

  5. Calgary Stampeders (Last Rank: 6)
Listen, I know I made a rule that teams would not move on a bye week, but I could not rank any of the other winless teams above them and Ottawa is who we though they were, so sue me. They look to rebound with a win when they host the team pretending to be the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week.

  6. Edmonton Elks (Last Rank: 8)
The Elks are the best of the worst as they were able to put thirty-six points on the board against an amazing Toronto Argos defense. They have now lost a third consecutive game by a single score. I feel like they are almost there, but they now have to play a very tough BC Lions team in Vancouver on TNF.

  7. Ottawa REDBLACKS (Last Rank: 5)
Well, RNation fans, you should be happy you beat the Bombers, but that seems to be about as difficult as former REDBLACK A.C. Leonard giving a urine sample. Hopefully, they can shake off the big loss to the Alouettes and regroup when they face the winless Ticats on Sunday.

  8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Last Rank: 7)
Hamilton traveled to Saskatchewan for the second half of the home and home with the Riders but could not get anything going even with the Riders having to have back up QB Shea Patterson in for most of the game. They fumbled the opening kickoff deep in their zone and turned the ball over a total of five times in a losing effort. They head east to try to get in the win column in Ottawa on Sunday night.

  9. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Last Rank: 9)
The Bombers are ninth by default, but I have the unbeaten Atlantic Schooners, Team Canada at the U20 World Football Championships, and the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers above them. But seriously, I honestly do not know what is wrong in Winnipeg. Coaching? Aging players? Injuries? All the above? Whatever it is, they need to figure it out fast. They travel to Calgary to play the Stampeders in an absolute must win game.
