Sheldon’s CFL Power Rankings

  1. BC Lions (Last Rank: 3)
The Lions are the new cream of the crop, so they rise to the top. They are not only the best team in the West but also have the best QB and have 2 of the top 3 wide receivers in the league. Justin McInnis and Alexander Hollins are making it look easy and are racking up the yards and TDs. Next week they head just east of the Rockies to play the Stampeders in Calgary.
  1. Montreal Alouettes (Last Rank: 1)
Not only did the Als lose their first game of the season this week, they may have also lost QB Cody Fajardo for an extended period of time with what looks like a hamstring injury. We will see what happens in practice once they return from BYE, but the Alouettes struggled when back up Caleb Evans came into the game against the Argos. Lucky for them, they are on bye this week, so hopefully Cody is able to recover quickly.

  2. Saskatchewan Roughriders (Last Rank: 2)
The Riders also lost their first game of the season when they visited BC. The defense gave up a ton of yards in the air but were able to hold the Lions to 7 FGs and had a lot of trouble offensively inside the green zone . The biggest loss, however, is seeing RT Jamarcus Hardrick carted off the field with a serious lower body injury on the same play Jarreth Sterns lost the ball that would have been a sure
TD. Shea Patterson has been serviceable with Trevor Harris out, but Harris looks to be getting close to returning according to HC Corey Mace. They host the Bombers on Friday Night Football.

  3. Toronto Argonauts (Last Rank: 4)
The Boatmen were able to slay the giant this week but did so while their opponents QB was injured early on. They took advantage of the turnovers they forced with Wynton McManis returning one INT for a TD, Janarion Grant returned a kickoff 103 yards for another TD and were able to pound the ball on the ground but couldn’t stretch the field in the passing game. They hit the the 403 to face Hamilton on Saturday.
  1. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Last Rank: 8)
The Blue and Gold won their second game in a row and are playing better football. This game was high scoring, but both teams also made a lot of mistakes. The emergence of Ontaria Wilson should
make Bomber fans feel a bit better about their receiving corps as he went off with 13 catches for 201 yards and caught Zach Collaros’ first TD pass since last season. They head west to face the Riders on
    Friday night.

  2. Ottawa REDBLACKS (Last Rank: 6)
The REDBLACKS were able to walk off with a victory this week and while they struggled defensively against the Elks, offensively they were quite impressive. Dru Brown threw for nearly 500 yards and the CFL might have found its next great explosive receiver in Kalil Pimpleton who had 4 catches for 153 yards including one 70-yard reception where if you blinked, you would have missed him. They look to sweep the home and home as they now host the Elks on Friday Night Football.

  3. Calgary Stampeders (Last Rank: 5)
Calgary dropped their second game in a row and need to improve on their deep passing game, or just go away from it for good. QB Jake Maier has been a lot better this season in the short to moderate distance passing, but his over / under throws on the deep balls are costing them points and in some cases possession. They went score for score and turnover for turnover with Winnipeg so it will be interesting to see how they can try to rebound when they host the hottest team in the league on Sunday night.

  4. Edmonton Elks (Last Rank: 7)
What can I say here. The Elks lost their third consecutive game in a row on a walk off, last second field goal. All signs pointed to the Elks forcing OT against the REDBLACKS as they tied it up with eight seconds left on the clock, but almost unfathomably let it slip through their hands as Boris Bede’s squib kickoff went out of bounds giving Ottawa the ball at their 50 yard line, Dru Brown finds Kalil Pimpleton for a 29 yard reception and Lewis Ward nails the FG to give Edmonton their 5th loss of the season. They will head to Ottawa without Chris Jones as Jarious Jackson has been named the team’s interim head coach while Geroy Simon takes over as GM.
  1. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Last Rank: 9)
Well Ticat fans, you did not lose this week, so that is a bonus, right? Hopefully, the team was able to figure stuff out in the bye week so that they can try to get things turned around. They host their rivals the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday night.
