Sheldon’s Top Performers – Week 5

Offense:

  1. Bo Levi Mitchell
Bo knows CFL football, and he showed it again leading the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a decisive victory over the hometown Toronto Argonauts in Week 5. Mitchell only needed 19 completions on 24 attempts to score 5 TDs. His 332 yards mostly went to Kenny ‘The King” Lawler who had 3 TDs, but he was also able to complete touchdown passes to Kiondre Smith and Tyler Ternowski. Bo Levi looks to continue leading the Ticats to wins as they host Ottawa next week.

  2. Justin Rankin
The Elks leaned on Justin Rankin not only for his rushing ability, but also his receiving skills as they faced the Ottawa REDBLACKS. Rankin had 12 carries for 105 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. That alone would be a great game, but Justin was also able to add 4 catches on as many targets for 69 (nice) yards and another TD. His ability to help the offense in both ways will be helpful as the Elks are improving every game and could live up to their potential soon.

  3. Kenny “The King” Lawler
The King ruled in Hamilton’s 51 – 38 win over the Toronto Argonauts. He had 6 receptions on 7 targets for a whopping 207 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kenny’s longest catch was for 79 yards, and he had an impressive 34.5 yards per catch average. Hamilton fans are finally getting to see the Kenny Lawler that Winnipeg fans loved and Edmonton fans wished they got. The chemistry he has built with Bo Levi Mitchell is scary for all other teams in the CFL’s East Division as they seem to be hitting their stride after a slow start.

Defense / Special Teams:

  1. Janarion Grant, Isaiah Wooden, Javon Leake, Kalil Pimpleton In a week where the kick return touchdown reigned supreme, I have just decided to highlight the 4 players who had kick or punt return touchdowns. Both the Argos / Ticats and the REDBLACKS / Elks games had a member of each team with huge return TDs.

On Friday Night Football, Janarion Grant of the Toronto Argonauts started it off with a 93-yard TD on a reverse after the Ticats were choosing not to kick off to him, but Kevin Brown tossed him the ball and he was gone. Later in the 4th quarter, Isaiah Wooden of the Tiger-Cats returned a Liram Hajrullahu kickoff 86 yards to not only score a touchdown, but win Roy Lyster of New Westminster, BC 1 million dollars as part of Save On Foods “Million Dollar Touchdown to Win” promotion. This is the first time in 25 years that the prize has been handed out.

On Sunday in the 2nd quarter, both the Edmonton Elks and Ottawa REDBLACKS had punt return touchdowns. Javon Leake was first to hit the endzone as he took a Ritchie Leone punt 94 yards for the touchdown. Closer to half time Kalil Pimpleton, who had to take over returning duties after DeVonte Dedmon suffered a serious injury earlier in the game and had to be taken off the field on a cart, returned a Cody Grace punt 97 yards to the endzone.

What an exciting week for returns!!
